Pickleball Shoe Glossary

Pickleball Shoe Glossary

Pickleball shoes use technical vocabulary that’s often unfamiliar to new players: ETPU midsole, herringbone outsole, carbon fiber shank, Blumaka® NonSlip Insole. This glossary defines every term you’ll see in a DAPS product description and across the broader pickleball footwear industry.

Terms are listed alphabetically. Each definition includes how the feature affects pickleball performance and, where relevant, how it’s implemented in DAPS DESI shoes.

Quick navigation

Arch Support

The structural support inside a shoe (typically built into the insole or midsole) that holds the foot’s arch in a neutral position during weight-bearing. Critical for players with plantar fasciitis, flat feet, or high arches. DAPS DESI shoes use the Blumaka® NonSlip Insole, which is contoured for medial arch support and heel cupping.

Blumaka® NonSlip Insole

The insole used in every DAPS DESI shoe. Made from recycled performance foam, it provides arch support, heel cupping, moisture wicking, and impact absorption. The Blumaka NonSlip Insole outlasts standard EVA insoles 2–3x and is removable to accommodate aftermarket orthotics.

Carbon Fiber Shank

A rigid strip of carbon fiber embedded in the midsole between the heel and forefoot. It provides lateral stability and energy return without adding weight. In pickleball shoes, the carbon fiber shank resists the foot rolling sideways during quick lateral cuts. The DAPS DESI Low and DESI Mid both include a carbon fiber shank.

CNC-Cut Tread

A tread pattern (typically herringbone) cut into the outsole using CNC (computer numerical control) machining rather than stamped or molded. CNC cutting produces sharper, more precisely angled grooves than stamped patterns, resulting in more reliable grip in all directions. DAPS DESI uses CNC-cut herringbone for pickleball-specific multi-directional traction.

Court Feel

The degree to which a shoe transmits ground feedback to the foot. A shoe with good court feel allows the player to sense court surface variation without losing protection. Low-profile shoes like the DESI Low typically offer better court feel than thick-soled training shoes.

Drop (Heel-to-Toe)

The difference in stack height between the heel and the forefoot of a shoe, measured in millimeters. Lower drops (4–8mm) keep the foot closer to the ground for better stability; higher drops (10–12mm) provide more heel cushioning. Most pickleball shoes use a moderate drop in the 6–10mm range.

Energy Return

The percentage of energy a shoe’s midsole returns to the foot after compression. Higher energy return means each step takes less effort over the course of a long match. ETPU midsole materials provide significantly higher energy return than standard EVA foam. DAPS DESI was independently tested at Heeluxe Labs and confirmed to outperform standard tennis sneakers on energy return.

ETPU Midsole

An expanded thermoplastic polyurethane foam used in pickleball shoe midsoles. ETPU returns more energy per step than standard EVA foam and holds its bounce 2–3x longer over the life of the shoe. DAPS DESI shoes use an ETPU midsole specifically for sustained energy return through long pickleball sessions.

EVA Midsole

Ethylene-vinyl acetate, the most common midsole foam in athletic shoes. EVA is light and cheap but compresses (flattens) faster than ETPU and provides less energy return. Most entry-level pickleball shoes use EVA midsoles; DAPS DESI uses ETPU instead for longer-lasting cushioning.

Heel Counter

The firm structure at the back of a shoe that wraps and supports the heel. A well-designed heel counter locks the heel in place, preventing slippage during lateral movement. In pickleball shoes, a structured heel counter is critical for ankle stability — if the heel slides inside the shoe, the ankle ends up doing the stabilizing work the shoe should be doing.

Herringbone Outsole

A V-shaped (chevron) tread pattern that grips court surfaces in multiple directions. The herringbone pattern is the industry standard for court sports because it provides traction during both forward strides and lateral cuts. DAPS DESI uses a CNC-cut herringbone outsole tuned specifically for indoor wood and outdoor concrete.

Insole

The removable cushioned layer inside the shoe that the foot rests on directly. Insoles handle arch support, impact absorption, and moisture management. The standard insole in DAPS DESI shoes is the Blumaka® NonSlip Insole, which can be replaced with aftermarket orthotics if needed.

Kitchen (Non-Volley Zone)

The 7-foot zone on each side of the pickleball net where players cannot volley the ball. The kitchen demands quick lateral movement and sudden stops as players move into and out of position, which puts heavy demand on lateral shoe stability and ankle support.

Last

The 3D foot-shaped form that a shoe is built on. The last determines the shoe’s internal shape: heel width, instep height, toe box volume. A women-specific last is shaped for women’s foot proportions rather than scaled from a men’s last. DAPS women’s DESI shoes are built on a women-specific last; the standard industry practice is to scale men’s lasts down, which is why most so-called “women’s pickleball shoes” don’t actually fit women’s feet properly.

Lateral Stability

A shoe’s ability to resist side-to-side foot motion during quick directional changes. Critical for pickleball, where players make repeated lateral cuts. Lateral stability comes from a combination of midsole structure (carbon fiber shank), upper lockdown, and a structured heel counter. Tested as a key biomechanics metric at Heeluxe Labs.

Low-Top (Low-Profile)

A shoe cut at or below the ankle bone. Low-tops prioritize speed, agility, and freedom of ankle movement. The DAPS DESI Low is the low-profile version of the DESI lineup, recommended for players who value fast footwork and don’t need additional ankle support.

Mesh Upper

The breathable woven or knit fabric that forms the upper portion of a pickleball shoe. A mesh upper allows airflow to keep feet cool during long sessions while reducing total shoe weight. DAPS DESI uses a structured mesh upper with selective overlay reinforcement for lockdown without binding.

Mid-Cut (Mid-Top)

A shoe cut just above the ankle bone, providing additional ankle support compared to a low-top. The DAPS DESI Mid uses a mid-cut collar reinforced for the women-specific (or men-specific) ankle shape, recommended for players with a history of ankle issues or who play aggressive lateral pickleball.

Midsole

The cushioning layer between the outsole and the insole. The midsole determines shock absorption, energy return, and overall shoe comfort. Common midsole materials include EVA (cheaper, flattens faster) and ETPU (higher performance, longer-lasting bounce). DAPS DESI uses ETPU.

Outsole

The bottom rubber layer of the shoe that contacts the court surface. The outsole determines traction, durability, and how the shoe wears over time. Pickleball outsoles are typically rubber compounds with a herringbone or multi-directional tread pattern. Outdoor concrete wears outsoles 50–70% faster than indoor wood.

Overpronation

Excessive inward rolling of the foot during the gait cycle. Overpronators often need shoes with structured midsoles to prevent the arch from collapsing. Common in players with flat feet. The DAPS DESI Blumaka® insole and structured midsole help moderate overpronation; severe cases may need custom orthotics.

Pickleball Shoe

A shoe engineered specifically for the movement patterns of pickleball: quick lateral cuts, sudden stops, explosive direction changes, and hard landings inside the kitchen. True pickleball shoes use court-specific outsole patterns, lateral-stability features, and pickleball-tuned cushioning. Most shoes marketed as “pickleball shoes” are actually tennis sneakers with new branding. DAPS DESI was built from scratch for pickleball, not adapted from another sport.

Plantar Fasciitis

Inflammation of the plantar fascia, the thick band of tissue running across the bottom of the foot. Aggravated by repeated heel impact, hard surfaces, and inadequate arch support. Pickleball shoes for players with plantar fasciitis should include a contoured arch-supporting insole and cushioned heel; the Blumaka® NonSlip Insole in DAPS DESI shoes is designed specifically for these features.

Toe Box

The front portion of the shoe that surrounds the toes. A wider toe box accommodates wide feet and allows the toes to splay during lateral movement; a narrower toe box provides a snugger fit for narrow feet. DAPS DESI shoes have a medium-width toe box that is slightly wider than typical court shoes, accommodating most foot widths up to E.

Women-Specific Last

A shoe last shaped for women’s foot proportions rather than scaled from a men’s design. Women generally have narrower heels, different forefoot shapes, and different ankle proportions than men. DAPS women’s DESI shoes are built on a women-specific last; the standard industry practice is to scale men’s lasts down, which is why most so-called “women’s pickleball shoes” on the market are really men’s shoes in smaller sizes.
